New Study on Painful Sex for Women

A study published early 2009 in the Journal of Sex Medicine suggests that dyspareunia (or painful intercourse) in women should be reclassified as a pain disorder and not as a sexual dysfunction.

The research focused on two groups of women – those with dyspareunia and those without. Both groups were asked to remember lists of words which were divided into four categories:

words related to sex
words related to pain
pleasant words not related to sex
unpleasant words not related to pain

The study reveals that women in both groups remember sex words more easily than pain words. However, women with dyspareunia reveals to wrongly remember pain words such as “pain” and “painful,” which were actually not on the list.

The researchers conclude that pain stimuli capture the attention of women with dyspareunia more easily, and these remain in their memory longer.

Laptops Have Apparent Link to Male Infertility

Young males should avoid placing their laptops on their laps. This is according to Suzannae Kavic, MD, director of the division of reproductive endocrinology at Loyola University Health System. Apparently, the heat generated from laptops can cause difficulty in sperm production and development, resulting in infertility later in life.

Kavic advises placing laptops on desktops instead. The following are some other tips to protect male fertility:

Avoiding hot tubs
Getting eight hours of sleep per night
Refraining from smoking
Avoiding excessive weight gain or weight loss
Eating well
Wearing boxers instead of briefs

Kavic also states that aside underlying health issues and medications can also be blamed for other fertility issues.

China Provides First Medical Guidelines on Sex Change Surgery

China’s Health Ministry posted on its website the first draft of its medical guidelines on sex change surgery. The Chinese government invite public and professional opinions before July 10, 2009.

China’s proposed guidelines state that candidates must have no record record of criminal offenses. The guidelines also state that immediate family of candidates must be informed prior to the operation. Patients also must be over 20, single, and have undergone psychological therapy for at least a year.

Most of the negative reactions come from the clause that candidates must show an agreement from police to change their sex on their identification cards once the procedure is complete.
