Only about 38 percent of men and women in their 30s and 40s used a condom with a new partner compared to 70 percent of those aged between 16 and 19. These figures came as the number of people diagnosed with sexually transmitted diseases have risen in five years.

The study was conducted by researchers for the second British National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles. They interviewed 11,161 respondents and asked these men and women about their three most recent partnerships, their condom use, the age differences in the partnership, and where they met and how soon after meeting they had sex.
