Sex myths throughout human history have been linked to the biases and prejudices of people through different periods of time. This is the conclusion of Brian Alexander’s article for MSNBC about sex myths.

He investigates the different sex myths – from Aristotle’s idea of “woman as an imperfect man” to Dr. Wilhelm Fliess theory that PMS is a nasal problem. He also includes the opinions of Rachel Maines, a visiting scholar in Cornell University’s Department of Science and Technology Studies and author of “The Technology of Orgasm: Hysteria, Vibrators and Women’s Sexual Satisfaction,” and of John S. Haller, professor emeritus of history and medical humanities at Southern Illinois University and author of “The Physician and Sexuality in Victorian America.”

They all point out the fact that “myths about sex in the western world waxed and waned depending largely on the state of sexual attitudes.”
