Studies published as articles in medical and psychological journals in 2008 reveal that “sexual numbness, lack of libido, and stalled arousals” are the most common side effects of Prozac class antidepressants. This is sometimes true even after a patient goes off drugs. There are those in the psychiatric profession stating that this is appalling and unfair especially for patients who already need to have their depression treated and would still have to deal with a failing sex life.

Representatives of some companies that make these Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, or SSRIs, say that sexual dysfunction is complex to measure. There are instances that it is difficult to distinguish issues caused by the drug from those that are caused by the underlying mental illness, by diseases such as diabetes, or by other medications. They defend that the Prozac label states that, “There are no adequate and well-controlled studies examining sexual dysfunction” of patients on Prozac.

Although researches the past year have found some methods to make it easier to measure the sexual dysfunction caused by SSRIs, many psychiatrists are still skeptical about this issue.
